Bus Modernisation Scheme

The bus modernisation scheme was introduced in 2014 to encourage bus owners to acquire new buses of semi low floor type. Since then, private bus operators and private companies have benefited from the subsidy provided by the scheme.

At launch, the scheme had a fixed subsidy of Rs 1 million. However with the fast evolution of land transportation in Mauritius, we have thus seen the introduction of different types of buses including double-decker and low floor buses.

As such, the bus modernisation scheme was amended in November 2017 to cater for different types of buses of different capacity. The new scheme is explained in-depth below.

Types of buses qualifying for subsidy

  1. Semi low floor or low floor buses of any engine technology
  2. High floor buses of any engine technology (Rodrigues only)
  3. Double-decker buses of any engine technology
  4. Fully built minibuses (up to 32 seats) of any engine technology
